What’s the Actual Difference Between VRF and VRV?
This confuses almost everyone, and the answer is simple. VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume) is Daikin’s own trademarked name for the technology it pioneered in the 1980s. VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) is the generic industry term every other manufacturer, such as Mitsubishi, LG and Toshiba, uses for the same underlying system. If your building runs on Daikin, you have a VRV system. Anything else, it’s VRF. The advantages and disadvantages below apply to both equally.
Both systems connect multiple indoor units to one outdoor compressor, with refrigerant flow adjusted independently for each zone, so different rooms or floors can be cooled to different temperatures at the same time from a single system.
Advantages of VRF and VRV Air Conditioning Systems
Energy efficiency. Because refrigerant flow adjusts to what each zone actually needs rather than running at full output everywhere, VRF/VRV systems typically use noticeably less energy than conventional multi-unit setups, especially in buildings where occupancy varies room to room.
Independent zone control. Every connected indoor unit can be set to a different temperature. An office where one side gets more sun than another benefits directly from this, without needing separate systems.
Quieter than ducted or window systems. The compressor sits away from occupied space, and indoor units run quietly, which matters in offices, retail floors and F&B spaces where noise affects customers and staff.
Space efficient. One outdoor unit can serve many indoor units, which matters in Singapore where roof and external wall space for compressors is often limited.
Simultaneous heating and cooling. Heat-recovery VRF/VRV systems can cool one zone while heating another using the same system, useful in buildings with mixed-use floors.
Disadvantages of VRF and VRV Air Conditioning Systems
Higher upfront cost. VRF/VRV installation costs more than standalone split units for the same floor area, since it needs a designed refrigerant piping network rather than simple point-to-point installation.
Locked into one brand for VRV. Choosing VRV means committing to Daikin parts and service compatibility. VRF gives you more flexibility across brands, but not all VRF brands are interchangeable with each other either.
Complex servicing. A fault anywhere in the refrigerant piping network can affect multiple zones at once, and diagnosing it requires a technician who understands the whole system, not just the affected indoor unit.
Whole-system risk. Because multiple zones share one outdoor compressor, a major compressor fault takes out cooling for every connected room until it’s repaired, unlike standalone splits where one unit failing doesn’t affect the others.
Servicing a VRF or VRV System
This is where most buildings fall behind. Because one system feeds every zone, skipping regular servicing on a VRF/VRV system risks a much bigger outage than a missed service on a single split unit. Is VRV better than VRF?
Neither is better. VRV is Daikin’s name for VRF technology. Choosing between them is really a choice of brand, not technology.
Can I mix VRF brands in one system?
Generally no. Indoor and outdoor units from different manufacturers aren’t designed to be compatible, so a system typically stays within one brand.
How often should a VRF/VRV system be serviced?
At minimum every three months for commercial use, with a maintenance contract to catch refrigerant leaks and compressor issues before they take out multiple zones at once.
Is VRF/VRV suitable for a home, or only commercial buildings?
